Definition of quot Minimum Turning radius quot
When looking at tractor specifications is "Minimum Turning Radius" = to the radius to the "outside" of the circle formed by the "Outside Wheels" ? Or is it the radius of the inner side Wheels?

I always assumed it meant the outside dimension. Essentially the minimum distance within which you could make a uturn and clear two parallel objects such as two fences. Or the minimum distance you could reverse direction when cultivating or otherwise working a field.

I'm not sure myself, but I do know that in most instances any specification related to the dimensions of or related to the tractor, 'tread' measurements normally refer to 'centerline' measurements (ie, wheelbase, track width, etc.) and 'physical' measurements refer to overall dimensions (ie, o'all length or width, transport height, etc.). By making the specification related to centerline measurements it is an easy calculation for someone to arrive at the "real world" turning radius for a tractor using tires and or rims other than used in the calculation of the given figures, such as the case for 'row crop' or 'orchard' machines.

Well, I did some searching to try to find something resembling a standard definition. Nothing specific to tractors, but I have found a few (and they were far between!) statements with regard to road vehicles. The consensus of these works, from various countries and the state of Texas, is that the turning radius is to the outside wheel. Does that apply to the specification used for tractors as well? If I find anything, I'll let you know.....

The manufacturers often use wheel tread settings that give them an advantage in turning. There is much that goes in to the advertised spec's in literature. Smaller front tires turn tighter than large ones some wheel spacings require less turning ability without tire interference with the tractor chassis.

Good points Art, as with any manufacturer they are going to set things up in such a way as to make their machine look like it performs better. Best way to figure it out is get on a machine set up the way you need it and go from there.

If the outside wheel track is used to define the minimum turning radius then there would be no such thing as a zero turning radius as is claimed on zero turn riding mowers, etc. Then again, if the inside wheel track radius is used as a definition, you couldn't distinguish between a vehicle that could spin around its center like a zero turn rider and a vehicle that could, for example, spin around one of the rear wheels.
